Forwarding DNS queries to Rawstream DNS

Once a network is defined in the Rawstream dashboard, it needs to be set to forward DNS queries to Rawstream DNS.

The network can forward DNS queries to Rawstream from any of the below network elements: 1. Internet router
2. WiFi Access Point
3. On-premise DNS server (Windows Server 2008 / 2012)
4. DHCP

The best option depends on your network layout.

When filtering guest WiFi you may want to set the access points to forward traffic, while for an organisation that is running Windows Active Directory / Windows DNS Server the better option will be updating the on-premise DNS server.

Note

Before updating the network confirm that your network is correctly configured in Rawstream. A DNS lookup for test.rawstream.com against Rawstream DNS should return 45.79.166.125.

DHCP

We do not recommend using DHCP to distribute the Rawsream DNS IPs to the clients to query directly.

We recommend having clients send DNS queries the router which then forwards them to Rawstream DNS. This enables the router to cache DNS responses, and allows resolution of internal hosts.
